Peter Van Rooijen, a third year business student at Trent, took the gold medal at the Under 23 Rowing World Championships in Belgrade, Yugoslavia on July 24. Peter was representing Canada in the men's eight against Russia, Croatia, France, Germany, Australia and Poland. The crew won their heat with a time of 5:56 minutes and went straight to the final where they posted a 5:42 for the 2,000 metre race.

"We had Germany on one side and Australia on the other," describes Peter. "France had a huge start at over 53 strokes per minute, we evened it up by the 1,000 mark, with Germany and Australia about a boat behind. At the 1,000 mark, we did a huge move and, over 10 strokes, got about a boat ahead of France and maintained our race rate from there for the win."

The other Canadians participating included a women's double, placing third; a men's pair, placing fourth; a men's lightweight four, placing fifth; and, a women's heavyweight four, placing seventh.

Peter tried out for the Under 23s in Victoria rowing on Elk Lake three times daily on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, twice daily on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with a day off on Sundays. He hopes to make the Under 23s again next year and row for Canada again. Peter is coached by Carol Love at Trent University, whom he claims benefited him greatly in his rowing technique. He is looking forward to coming back to Trent this fall and rowing the single. A camp is planned for the first week of September for all Varsity athletes.

Peter is planning on finishing a four year business degree at Trent, and then? "Maybe more school, maybe more rowing. I would love to be a commercial pilot but if not I will pursue a career in the business world."
