Trent University Rower Brent Holmes Chosen to Represent Canada at Under 23 World Championships

Mr. Holmes continues the strong tradition of Trent Rowing

Brent HolmesTrent University rower and second year student Brent Holmes will have the opportunity to represent his country at the Under 23 Federation Internationale du Sport Aviron (FISA) World Rowing Championships, having recently been selected for this year's Canadian team. Mr. Holmes will compete in the men's heavy eight boat July 20-23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium.

"This is an excellent opportunity for me to get international racing experience. I am very excited to represent my country," said Mr. Holmes.

In preparation for the under 23 rowing world championships Brent will be training 3 times a day and 6 days a week with the national team on Elk Lake, British Colombia. “It is an impressive workload and should prepare us to perform well at the Worlds,"  added Mr. Holmes.

The sport of rowing at Adam Scott High School opened up possibilities for Mr. Holmes. Upon graduation he chose to come to Trent to combine his passion to succeed in rowing with a university education.

“His friends call him Big Country Holmes. Making the U23 National Team will give Brent the opportunity to travel and compete against the world. It is an exciting step in his athletic development. Trent will be fortunate to have him back in their varsity crew in the fall, where he also fulfills the duties of the President of the Trent University rowing club.," says Carol Love, Head Coach of Trent Rowing.

In the fall, Brent will be returning to Trent University, and will be looking to build upon this experience for both he and his teammates in the OUA rowing season.

These are the same world championships that Brent’s former teammate and Trent University alumnus, Peter Van Rooijen competed at, winning a gold medal in 2003 and earning a silver medal in 2004.
