Peterborough Bid for 2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair to be Presented May 14

Science Fair Bid TeamAs the 2006 Canada-Wide Science Fair gets underway in Saguenay, Quebec this weekend, a team from Peterborough will be presenting a formal bid to host the event in 2010.

Peterborough's bid focuses on the theme "Connecting Waters: Go anywhere from here" and provides an outline of how the city would run this prestigious national event. The proposal covers everything from the Opening Ceremonies to the Awards Ceremony and outlines extra activities Fair participants can take part in during their time in Peterborough, including: tours at Trent, a visit to the Peterborough Canoe Museum, and day trips to Toronto and the Petrogylphs.

Trent University is a host partner in the bid and would be providing accommodations and facilities for the 800 people expected to attend the event. Trent Chancellor Dr. Roberta Bondar has been identified as the honorary chair for the Fair. The Evinrude Centre would be the main venue for the event.

Co-chairs of the Peterborough Bid Team are Brian Patrick, a Professor of Computer Studies/Science at Trent and director of the Peterborough Regional Science Fair, Gina Collins, the academic secretary for the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the program secretary of the Applications of Modelling in the Natural and Social Sciences Graduate Program at Trent, and Linda O'Leary, a teacher with the Trillium Lakelands District School Board and chair of the Victoria County Science Fair Committee. Other members of the team include: Ann McIlmoyle, a former high school science teacher; Mark Dzurko, joint Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry at Queen's and Trent and chief judge of the Peterborough Regional Science Fair; Marc Gagne, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board Instructional Leadership consultant for science and technology; Dianne Lister, Trent's VP of external relations and advancement; Don O'Leary, VP (Administration) at Trent; and John Knight, a development officer with the University.

The Executive Committee of the Canada-Wide Science Fair will be meeting throughout the week of May 15. A decision on Peterborough's bid is expected during that time.
