Trent to Host Elite Rugby Tournament

Nancy MarcotteTrent University is proud to announce that the first annual Icebreaker High School Women's Rugby tournament, scheduled to take place here at Trent, has now been filled. The tournament, set for April 7, will attract eight of the top programs from around the province and should provide an early season showcase of some of the top talent in Ontario.

"We're very excited about who is coming," said Trent head coach Nancy Marcotte. "With the new field, we're in a position to offer a tournament before the grass dries and that was very well received by coaches who struggle every year to get their programs going in the spring."

The tournament will include teams from: Ashbury College in Ottawa, Bayside in Belleville, Napanee, Bear Creek in Barrie, Philip Pocock in Mississauga, Brock in Cannington, Lakeshore Catholic in Port Cobourne, and Thomas A. Stewart in Peterborough.

"These are eight of the top programs in Ontario," Marcotte said. "Ashbury finished second at OFSAA last year, Napanee, fourth. Bock and Lakeshore both go to OFSAA every year and Lakeshore won it in 2004. TAS and Bayside won AAA and AA COSSA respectively and have already qualified for OFSAA this spring. Both of them defeated the defending OFSAA champions in the fall.  Bear Creek and Pocock are also very competitive programs from areas where high school rugby is very strong."

This elite tournament will provide Trent with the opportunity to showcase the new field and the university as a whole to more than 200 high school athletes.

"We want them to be thinking about Trent when they get around to choosing their university," Marcotte said. "We have a great school with a lot to offer the student-athlete but we're not the first place they think of. This should help change that situation."
