Eid Dinner to Support South Asia Earthquake Survivors

TMSA's annual Eid dinnerThe Trent Muslim Students' Association's annual Eid dinner on Friday, November 4 will double as a fundraiser for victims of the South Asia earthquake.

All proceeds from the dinner, which celebrates the end of Ramadan, will go toward survivors of the massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Pakistan, India and parts of Afghanistan on October 8.

The Eid dinner will be held at Lady Eaton College Dining Hall. Those who attend will be treated to delicious South Asian cuisine, vegetarian and Halal included.

A table to collect cash donations will be set up at the dinner. As well there will be a separate room for children's activities and henna tattoos for the whole family. Tickets will be on sale on campus beginning Monday, October 31.

Fundraising for the earthquake survivors is ongoing on campus. Cash donations continued to flow into Red Cross donation tins up to the end of last week.

Two shipments of clothing and blankets have gone to Toronto where PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) has agreed to fly relief supplies to the devastated area for free.

However, donations of blankets, tents and tarps are still needed, said international student Najim Dost, who is helping coordinate campus relief efforts.

"There's not enough awareness, people are still in dire need," said Mr. Dost, who is from Afghanistan and is a fourth year Economics and Business Administration student. "They should not be forgotten – their suffering is not over yet."

Mr. Dost vows to continue collecting these items, "as long they are needed." Those who wish to donate supplies can contact Mr. Dost at najim17@yahoo.com or S.K. Hussan at hussan@gmail.com

Mr. Dost, along with fellow students Mr. Hussan and Waqas Anwar have organized and mobilized campus relief efforts.

Tickets for the Eid dinner are $12 and are available at the TIP Office, Bata Library, Otonabee College and Gzowski College. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.trentu.ca/tmsa
