2005/06 Rooke Lecture Series Opens With Celebrated Author Frances Itani |

Writer Frances Itani will open the eighth annual Rooke Lecture Series, Hearing Canadian Voices, with a talk on Thursday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library. During her lecture, "Something to Celebrate: Fictional Characters in Search of Hope and Celebration," Ms. Itani will read from Deafening as well as her novel-in-progress, Celebration. Ms. Itani is an accomplished novelist, poet and short story writer. She has written 10 books including her international bestseller Deafening (2003), which won the 2004 Commonwealth Award for Best Book. It was shortlisted for the 2005 IMPAC Dublin Award and the 2005 William Saroyan International Literary Award and has been translated in 19 countries. Her book Poached Egg on Toast won the 2005 CAA Jubilee Award and the 2005 Ottawa Book Award for Fiction. Ms. Itani is also a three-time winner of the CBC Literary Award. Other Rooke Lectures include:
This year's Rooke Lecture Series honours the late Gordon Roper, professor emeritus, Trent University. A long-time resident of Peterborough, Prof. Roper's distinguished career led from Peterborough to the University of Chicago, Yale University and the University of Toronto, before he returned home to conclude his teaching years at Trent. All Peterborough lectures begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library. All Oshawa lectures begin at 7:30 p.m. (7 p.m. on February 1) in Room I-110, Gordon Willey Building, Durham College/UOIT, 2000 Simcoe Street North.
