2004 Rooke Lectures: Those Were the Days

Trent English Department Series Celebrates Trent's Founding Decade with a Nostalgic Look at the Sixties

The sixties revisited. This year's Rooke Lecture series invites audience members to return to the sixties, the decade of Trent University's founding, with talks on the early days and the architecture of the University as well as literary and cultural landmarks of the period. The series will be highlighted by visits from old friends and former residents of Peterborough, who will help us mark Trent's fortieth anniversary throughout the year.

Some Highlights. Friends of Professor Emeritus Gordon Roper will want to be on hand on October 28th as we gather to present an evening of readings and reminiscences in his honour. A longtime resident of Peterborough, Professor Roper's distinguished career led from Peterborough to the University of Chicago, Yale University and the University of Toronto, before he returned home to conclude his teaching years at Trent. Later in the series, Sharon Vattay, architectural historian, will speak about Ron Thom, whose architectural vision helped to define Peterborough's daring experiment on the banks of the Otonabee. Fans of CBC's "Ontario Morning" will welcome the return of frequent contributor and Professor Emeritus John Syrett, who will lecture on the war in Viet Nam. And look for lectures as well on boxer George Chuvalo, on experimental music of the sixties, on literary figures of the period, Margaret Laurence and Alice Munro, and on the publishing industry in the sixties, with well-known Canadian publisher Douglas Gibson.

The full schedule of speakers and titles:

October 28 • Celebrating Gordon Roper

November 18 • American Defeat: The Divisive Vietnam War - John Syrett

December 2 • Sixties Plus: Canadian Book Publishing in the Long Decade - Douglas Gibson

January 20 • Freak Out: The 1960's Musical Avant-Garde Revisited - Ellen Waterman

Temporary Change of Location. Even the Peterborough flood can't dampen the Rooke, now in its seventh year of providing entertaining lectures for the Peterborough public. The first four lectures in the series will move to the Art Gallery of Peterborough, while the Peterborough Public Library, co-sponsor of the event, completes restoration work to its basement auditorium. As in past years, all lectures take place on Thursday evenings at 7:30.

Lectures in October, November and December at the Art Gallery of Peterborough; watch for announcements regarding locations of subsequent lectures.
