Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies selected by search committee The Office of the Vice-President (Academic) is pleased to announce the appointment of two Trent University faculty members to the positions of Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies. Professor Susan Apostle-Clark announced today that Dr. James Parker of Trent's Department of Psychology will assume the role of Associate Vice-President (Research), while Dr. Douglas Evans of the Environmental and Resource Studies Program at Trent, will take on the position of Dean of Graduate Studies effective September 1, 2004. Both individuals are accomplished, award-winning researchers who will offer a wealth of wisdom and experience to these roles and in turn, the Trent University community as a whole, says Prof. Apostle-Clark. "Along with their exceptional experience, Professors Parker and Evans will bring their individual, yet complementary research perspectives to these new roles," says Prof. Apostle-Clark. "Their familiarity with the University and its future directions will allow us to work together to further define these roles, as we strive to enhance research and graduate student opportunities." Prof. Apostle-Clark would like to thank Dr. Chris Metcalfe for his commitment and dedication to the role of Dean of Research and Graduate Studies over the last four years. In recognition of the incredible growth of the research and graduate studies portfolio and the resulting workload, the position of Dean of Research and Graduate Studies has been divided to create two roles. The recommendation for their creation followed an external review of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies in the winter term. Meanwhile, the provision of Indirect Costs of Research (ICOR) funding through the federal government allowed Trent to move forward in establishing these positions. Prof. Parker has published more than 100 articles and chapters, mostly in the areas of emotion and health. He co-developed the Coping Inventory for Successful Situations - a widely used measure of basic coping styles, which was published in 1990. More recently, he co-developed the youth version of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory - the first reliable and valid measure of emotional intelligence for children and adolescents, published in 2000. He is co-author of the recent book (1997) from Cambridge University Press titled, Disorders of affect regulation: Alexithymia in medical and psychiatric illness, and the co-editor of The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence, published in 2000 by Jossey-Bass. Prof. Evans is a member of the Editorial Board for The Scientific Work, Environmental Management and Policy Domain and Geochemical Journal. He has written more than 100 articles and edited the books The Interactions Between Sediment and Water: Proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium, in 2001, and Proceedings from the Seventh International Symposium on Sediment - Water Interactions, in 1997. Prof. Evans has supervised many theses and a dozen postdoctoral fellows. As Associate Vice-President (Research) for a four-year term, Prof. Parker will have the primary responsibility for the co-ordination and development of research at Trent. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Canada Research Chair in Emotion and Health. Prof. Parker is also Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) University Delegate for Trent, where he began as an assistant professor in 1994. In 1997, Prof. Parker became an associate professor and in 1998, graduate director for the Applications of Modelling in the Natural and Social Sciences (AMINSS) graduate program. Previously Prof. Parker was a research fellow and a special lecturer at the University of Toronto and prior to that, held a position as special lecturer at York University. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from York University and his B.A. from Simon Fraser University.
As Dean of Graduate Studies for a three-year term, Prof. Evans will play a leading role in the development and implementation of policies and strategies related to the quality of graduate programs, the development of new programs and to the recruitment of high quality graduate students. He is currently director of the Watershed Ecosystems Graduate Program and a professor of Environmental and Resource Studies at Trent. Prof. Evans was previously the director of both the Institute of Mass Spectrometry and the Water Quality Centre at Trent. In 1997, he was visiting professor at the University of Plymouth in Plymouth, U.K., and in 1993, a visiting scientist at the Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research in Switzerland. Prof. Evans earned his Ph.D. from McGill University and his bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto.
