Trent Welcomes Special Olympics and Tourism and Recreation Minister

Enthusiasm and excitement permeated Trent University's Symons Campus as it welcomed more than 900 athletes as part of the Ontario Special Olympics Spring Games in Peterborough June 10 - 13. As one of the weekend's highlights, Tourism and Recreation Minister Jim Bradley visited the Athletic Complex and addressed the athletes.

Minister Bradley congratulated the athletes and took the opportunity to thank the hundreds of Spring Games volunteers, who made the event possible. The Minister, along with MPP Jeff Leal, Mayor Sylvia Sutherland and Trent Vice-President (Academic) Susan Clark presented the athletes with medals at the final awards ceremony.

Glenn MacDonell, Executive Director and CEO of Ontario Special Olympics also spoke, congratulating all participants and thanking Trent University.

Mr. Bradley's visit to Trent University ended a full day of events and meetings in Peterborough that included the opening ceremonies of the Dragon Boat Festival. The Minister is the MPP for St. Catharines and has held senior positions on both the government and opposition benches, having served as interim leader of the Ontario Liberal Party from November 1991 to February 1992, House Leader of the Official Opposition and Liberal Critic for Consumer and Commercial Relations, Treasury and Education.

"It was an absolute pleasure to welcome these amazing athletes and volunteers, as well as Mr. Bradley, Mr. Leal and Mayor Sutherland to the campus," said Trent Athletic Director Bill Byrick. "The athletes were truly remarkable in their enthusiasm for sport, competition and friendship."

Swimming competitions had taken place over the course of the three-day event at the Athletic Complex, while powerlifting took place at Wenjack Theatre. Social events also took place on campus, including an athlete barbeque on Friday evening.
