Professor Charles Mills to Speak on "Philosophy and Race: the Whiteness of Being"

Trent's Philosophy Society will welcome Professor Charles Mills of the Department of Philosophy, University of Illinois at Chicago, on Friday, January 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Champlain College Council Chamber. Prof. Mills will be giving a talk "Philosophy and Race: the Whiteness of Being," and all are welcome.

The Philosophy Society acknowledges the support of the Trent University Philosophy department, the Cockalorum Fund (established by David Beattie), the TCSA and also the Department of Philosophy at Carleton University in making this event possible.

In January, in preparation for the talk, the Philosophy Society has been studying Prof. Mills' chapter "Non-Cartesian Sums: Philosophy and the African American Experience" from his book Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race and the article "Race and the Social Contract Tradition." Both readings are available in the Philosophy department office.

Prof. Mills received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1985, and previously taught
at the University of Oklahoma. His main research interests are in radical and oppositional political theory,
particularly around issues of class, gender, and race.
