Trent University Named Undergraduate Research University of the Year in National Survey Publication

#1 ranking based on research income, faculty research and graduate research intensity at the University

A national survey ranking Canada's innovation leaders has named Trent University one of three Research Universities of the Year for 2003, ranking Trent number one in comparison with other primarily undergraduate universities nationwide.

Published today as an insert in the National Post, the results by Research Infosource (http://www.researchinfosource.com/) were based on a combination of factors. According to the scorecard, the top performing universities "demonstrated superior achievement both in earning research income and in publishing research in leading Canadian and international journals." The survey took into account the research intensity of both faculty and graduate students, along with total sponsored research income.

The Researcher of the Year designation comes fresh on the heels of Trent's number one ranking for quality of education in a Globe and Mail survey published on October 15, 2003.

Professor Chris Metcalfe, Trent's Dean of Research and Graduate Studies felt the survey recognized the University's strength in research. "Trent is a research intensive university," he said. "The results of this study recognize the success of Trent faculty in attracting financial support for their research (over $10 million this year), and the publication records of both our faculty and graduate students. Trent researchers make a contribution on a national and international scale."

Recognizing gross research income as "a crude measure" on its own, due to the differing size of universities throughout the country, Research Infosource attempted to "level the playing field" through a more balanced set of input and output measures. Trent ranked 32nd in the report's comprehensive list of the Top 50 research universities in Canada, which includes much larger institutions with research-intensive professional programs.

Trent University is an outstanding undergraduate university known for its commitment to a liberal arts and sciences education. Research at Trent focuses on eight priority areas that include Archaelogical Studies, Environmental and Resource Management Studies, Canadian Studies, Native Studies, Cultural Studies, Health Studies, Quantitative Modeling Studies, and International Studies. Within a collegial setting, the University offers traditional and interdisciplinary degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels. Spanning the picturesque Otonabee River in Peterborough, Ontario, Trent's main campus features award-winning architecture designed to complement its natural setting. Trent's strengths include interdisciplinary studies in environmental sciences – especially aquatic and DNA research – and in Canadian Studies and Native Studies. The University serves over 7,000 full and part-time students in Peterborough and Oshawa.
