Alumnus Phil Graham Is On the Move:
From Rowing to Proprietary Trading

Phil Graham ’89 was well-known during his years at Trent as a top varsity rower. A key member of the Trent team until 1993, he feels 1990 was a particularly good year. "That was the best year - we won the Head of the Charles in the 8," he remembers.

From Trent, Mr. Graham continued his rowing career, and moved to Victoria to row on the national team.

"Martin May was my coach at Trent and he really encouraged a few of us to try out for the national team. I made it in 1993, and rowed from 1994 to 2001 as part of the team," explains Mr. Graham.

Now settled into his life in Victoria, Mr. Graham has made a radical career shift. During his time on the national team, he did some work as a software developer, and last June decided to try his hand at proprietary trading. He completed a training course and hasn’t looked back.

"I love it. The American capital markets are an exciting place to spend your time. There are so many players and facets to the markets - what makes them move and what doesn’t. This career has a lot of intensity, which follows from my rowing career, which was very focussed," says Mr. Graham.

Mr. Graham is working for Swift Trade Securities Inc., a national company with ten offices across Canada. In August he will return to full-time studies at the University of Victoria to complete a two-year MBA.
