Trent sponsors TAS team for robotics competition

Trent University, Fleming College and GE Canada presented a symbolic cheque to Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (TAS) on Thursday, December 12. The $8,500 pledged by the three institutions will sponsor a team of high school students to compete in the Canadian Regional Robotics Competition in March, 2003.

The competition is called FIRST, which means "for inspiration and recognition of science and technology," and will involve teams from across Canada. It is anticipated that this year - the second year of the competition in Canada - there will be over 50 teams participating. This will involve over 5,000 students.

Robots for the competition must be built in just six weeks by teams of students, teachers and other professionals. Robots will compete in a task-oriented, co-operative exercise during the nationwide event. The aim, throughout the entire process, is to inspire students to pursue careers in math, science and technology.

Teams will come together on January 4 at the Ontario Science Centre for a kick-off competition, and the TAS team needs to complete a mini robot for that event. This will be followed by the official event, March 27 - 29 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Teachers at TAS involved in the project include Paul Found, Vicki McMullen and Blaine White.

Trent University’s Dr. Brad White, a world leader in the use of robotics for DNA analysis, represented the University at the December 12th cheque presentation.
