Instructional designer's help available

Dr. Jonathan Swallow has joined the Interactive Learning Centre (ILC) at Trent. An experienced instructional designer who works with the Learning and Teaching Through Technology (LT3) Centre at the University of Waterloo, he is also now working for the ILC to provide instructional design services to Trent University faculty.

Dr. Swallow's role is to work with faculty members to investigate, create and apply innovative instructional strategies. He is also available to demonstrate innovative applications of learning technologies which enable students to discuss, apply, and explore new concepts. He can assist faculty with decisions about the application of learning technologies in courses.

Dr. Swallow will hold regular office hours in the ilc, on the 200 level of the Bata Library, from 2 - 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

What does an instructional designer do?

  • The instructional designer's role is to work with faculty to investigate, create and apply innovative instructional strategies.
  • Instructional design discussions with faculty help to generate solutions to instructional challenges which are sensitive to both students' needs and faculty priorities.
  • Learning technologies can often provide a means to implement innovative solutions - enabling students to discuss, apply, and explore new concepts.
  • The instructional designer can demonstrate innovative applications of learning technologies, and assist faculty with decisions about the application of learning technologies in their courses.
