Dr. Chris Metcalfe
Acting Director, Water Quality Centre; Professor, School of the Environment; Director, Institute for Watershed Science
For over 30 years, Dr. Chris Metcalfe has focused his research at Trent on the distribution and toxic effects of contaminants in the environment. His early research focused on the fate and effects of persistent contaminants (e.g., PCBs), but his work then shifted to an emphasis on more water-soluble contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and new generation pesticides. His early recognition and participation in this paradigm shift to water-soluble contaminants has resulted in national and international recognition of the innovative nature of his research program, and has fostered his participation in international research teams. He has also led projects to evaluate the distribution and impacts of the release of nanoparticles into the environment. Dr. Metcalfe is also involved in in vitro and in vivo studies on the toxicological effects of contaminants.
