Cheryl Davies '68
Association President from
October 1997 to May 2001

Cheryl DaviesAs of May 12, 2001, my Presidency of the Alumni Association will be over. I have served on the Alumni Council for ten years and I will continue to serve for two more years as Past President. The past four years as Association President has been very exciting and challenging for me. I have personally been involved in the induction ceremony for three University Presidents. I have spoken at convocation five times. I have lived at Champlain College for a year as Alumni in Residence. My husband Bryan and I were honored by the Association by having an annual award named after us. The Cheryl and Bryan Davies award is given each year to a graduating student of Champlain College who has contributed to College Life through the demonstration of one or more of the following qualities: compassion, generosity, enthusiasm, innovation, creativity, enterprise. To have the honour of posterity is indeed humbling and I am very grateful to the Association for their generosity.

In my final message, I would like to thank all of the council members who have come and gone over the years. Their dedication to the University has been nothing short of miraculous and time after time I have seen these volunteers give of their time and talents selflessly and without complaint. I would like to thank the Executive for their wise council and their unfailing support of me. I have found over the years that Trent friends are like no others. They are unique in their enthusiasm and in their ability to problem solve. This is what has made the Association so strong. I would also like to thank Tony Storey and Kathleen Easson for their guidance, their encouragement, their hard work, and most of all their friendship. They have been there for me as a shoulder when times were difficult and as joyful allies when times were good.

Living on campus enabled me to observe the workings of the University in the new Millennium first hand.

Kathleen Easson is doing an outstanding job of being the Alumni advocate for students at Trent. She works tirelessly to help the students to problem solve and advises them on academic and personal difficulties. Her presence on the Campus two days a week has enhanced awareness of the Association and has provided a safe counsel for our students. Thanks also goes to her husband Glen, who along with members of the Physical Resources department put students first. My deep gratitude also goes to Master Stephen Brown who welcomed us to the campus and provided us with many opportunities to meet with students, staff and faculty. It was a wonderful year. Finally, I would like to thank President Bonnie Patterson who has been supportive of the Alumni Association by attending our meetings, our functions and even offering her home last year for our annual weekend retreat. I would like to commend her for her strong leadership, for having the courage of her convictions and for exhibiting grace under fire.

In closing, I would like to thank all of the Alumni who have given so generously to Trent, and who continue to care about the quality of a Trent education.

For all of the opportunities that I have been given and for your strong support, I thank you one and all. I have had a ball!
