Michael Treadwell- At the time of publication, TrenT magazine was very saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Michael Treadwell on April 24, 1999. The next issue of TrenT (September '99) will feature a tribute to this wonderful teacher and scholar who inspired so many former Trent students.

Dr. Leslie Calvert '67 died on August 17, 1998. He was a local surgeon who served in World War II in the Canadian Army Medical Corps (he won an M.C. and finished his Army career as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Reserves). Dr. Calvert was one of Trent's first German students (one of four, I believe) in 1967. He graduated with a double major B.A. in German and History. Some of Les's friends got together in the mid-eighties and established the Dr. Leslie Calvert Award for students who need to participate in the year abroad program in Freiburg.

Professor C. Fewster

Mary Ann Outwater '65 passed away on September 27, 1998 following several years of illness that started with breast cancer. Trent has lost a valued supporter.

When Mary Ann entered first year, Trent was in its second year of life. After receiving an honours B.A. in History, she earned a Bachelor of Education at the University of Toronto and began her 29 year career teaching at East Northumberland Secondary School in Brighton.

During her career, Mary Ann celebrated her love of learning by taking a variety of courses and applied that knowledge teaching new programs and courses. More than that, she loved to learn through traveling-including a year long trip in 1984 when she followed summer around the world.

Mary Ann's sense of social justice, begun in Trent days, governed much of her life. She took an active role in her Riding's Liberal association, in her District's Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation and her Community's Children's Aid Society.

Mary Ann Outwater touched the lives of thousands of people in her teaching career and her life. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, her love of adventure, her loyalty to family and friends and her unfailing optimism. She will be missed.

Leslie (Shuter) Lewis '65

It is with regret that I inform you of the passing of my wife Betty Joan Lock '77 in June of 1998 (another victim of cancer). She was an excellent wife, mother and companion and came far from her simple beginnings. She graduated from Julian Blackburn College with a B.A. in the fall of 1981, and was an elementary teacher for 23 years, rising to the position of Family Studies Specialist.

William A. Lock

The son of Jim and Judy Frawley, Sean Frawley '84 was born in Kingston and graduated from Regiopolis Notre-Dame High School in 1984. He graduated from Trent University in Peterborough in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts and moved back to Kingston where he received his Bachelor of Education from Queen's University in 1989. Mr. Frawley began his career at Holy Family, where he taught for eight years. He then taught for two years at Scole Catherdrale, but left for health reasons last April. While he was studying at Trent, he met Debbie Bartsch of Oshawa and they were married in 1989 and had three children, a daughter Taylor, 8, and sons Trent, 6 and Aaren, who is almost six months old.

Sadly, Sean died in his sleep on November 29, 1998. He was 33. His health was affected by a condition called scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. A web page is being designed in his memory.

Natasha Ann Taylor '93 passed away on March 13, 1999. Natasha graduated from Trent with an honours B.A. in Canadian Studies in 1996 and was affiliated with Lady Eaton College. Natasha touched the lives of many in her 25 years. She faced each challenge with courage and determination, overcoming numerous obstacles to accomplish her goals. Her wonderful sense of humour and her passion for life made her an inspiration to everyone she met. Natasha will be sadly missed and fondly remembered always by her family, friends, and especially her loving husband Michael Scott Taylor '94.

Dr. Cyril Carter, Professor Emeritus, who retired from Trent in 1993 passed away in February.

Dr. Carter completed his PhD in Mathematical Physics in England in 1955. He joined Trent's faculty in 1968 and in 1971 was appointed Chair of the Department of Mathematics. In 1984 he was appointed Chair of the Environmental and Resource Studies Program. Dr. Carter was elected as a faculty representative to the Trent Board of Governors in 1988 for a one year term.

Donations in Dr. Carter's memory can be made to The New Democratic Party (Provincial or Federal), The Cyril and Jennie Carter Scholarship Fund at Trent University or Kawartha Food Share, Peterborough.

Professor Linda Hubbell died on December 18th, 1998 after a four-year illness. Professor Hubbell joined Trent's Anthropology Department in 1972 and served as Chair between 1980 and 1984.

Brian McManus '92, a graduate of Native Studies at Trent University, and the Social Service Worker Program at Sir Sandford Fleming College, was an active member of the Trent, Fleming and Peterborough communities. He was Senior Don at Peter Robinson College, a member of the EEEC Committee at Fleming, coordinator of the Fleming Peer Helper Program, a member of Amnesty International, and coordinator of Amnesty's Trent University Chapter.

Brian was deeply involved with social issues. He lived his life in harmony with his beliefs in the equality of men and women, and respect for aboriginal peoples. He was a quiet and gentle man who was loved by many, and respected for his dignity and courage, the qualities with which he faced his illness. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family.
