Teaching Scholars' Table

The Centre for Teaching and Learning is hosting a Teaching Scholars’ Table group this academic year. The aim of the group is to form a professional learning community (PLC) for people who are interested in conducting research on teaching and/or learning in their discipline. The goal is to increase collective capacity as scholars that study our teaching practices. The group is aimed at supporting the Senior Lecturers, but is also open to other faculty at Trent. People who are interested in investigating a specific aspect of their teaching such as course design renewal, pedagogical shifts or evaluation and assessment practices should contact Robyne for more information about taking part. The group will be limited to 25 spots. Each participant will be supported in pursuing their own research project. Funding for research assistance is available on a case-by-case basis. Participants will also be recognized as founding members of the Teaching Scholars’ Table.
For the past two years, the CTL worked on an inter-disciplinary collaborative study: 1st Year Academic Experience Project. The goal of the project was to conduct a ‘360 degree’ scan of the first-year academic experience. The final report carried a series of recommendations, including developing PLCs to support faculty conducting research on their teaching practices. Although many faculty conduct subject specific research, there has been an identified gap in SoTL. With the introduction of Senior Lecturers at Trent and a re-energizing of teaching excellence at Trent, the Centre for Teaching and Learning has secured a donation for this program as well as a research grant to study the effectiveness of using the professional learning community model to increase faculty capacity and efficacy for SoTL
