Professor Ray Dart began teaching at Trent in the Environmental and Resources Studies Department while he was working on his doctorate at the Schulich School of Business at York University. In the year 2000, he finished his dissertation and began teaching at Trent full-time in the Business Administration Department.
"I teach (and have taught) a wide variety of courses, because I have a number of interests and because teaching different things keeps me interested, engaged, curious and challenged," explains Professor Dart. "In terms of teaching, I really try to work on a balanced or dialectic approach where learners have a strong practical background. I challenge students to understand the ideas and history behind their work, and as a result they become learners who are more conceptual-and issues-focused. Further, I challenge students to ground their ideas in pressing situations in the world today. The curiosity, varied background, and interesting ideas of my students always impresses and challenges me. Teaching is my favourite part of my wonderful job."
Professor Dart's research focuses in the area where organizations and communities interact - environmental, social and international development organizations, community businesses, community learning processes etc. with nonprofit sector organizations, he does research on innovation, on strategy development and on improving effectiveness.
