- Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching (2001)
Mr. Paul Wilson was the first non-faculty staff member to be awarded the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching. Now retired, Mr. Wilson was one of Trent’s longest serving employees, serving as director of Athletics from 1966. A leader among Trent staff and a loyal ambassador and promoter of Trent University and the City of Peterborough, Mr. Wilson was, and still is, one of the most experienced and established Athletic Directors in the province. Upon his retirement he was the longest serving university athletics director in the country.
In his role as Athletic director and coach, Mr. Wilson taught generations of students crucial lessons about sport. He placed emphasis on participation versus elite performance and educated students about the values of sportsmanship. He also encouraged students to take leadership roles in organizing sport activities and introduced them to sports administration. Upon receiving the Symons Award, Mr. Wilson said “I feel very honoured and even somewhat overwhelmed. It is particularly poignant for me because it an acknowledgement of the relevance and value that athletics and recreation plays in student life.”
Upon Mr. Wilson’s retirement, the Trent Athletic Complex was named the PSB Wilson Athletic Complex in his honour.
