Faculty Showcase for Remote Teaching: Holly Bates
Dr. Holly Bates (Biology)
In this showcase, Dr. Holly Bates (BIOL) features her course, BIOL 4355H: Pathophysiology of Disease. In that course, she uses case studies to assess students' learning.
Holly begins by discussing how she addresses the challenges presented by case studies (2:58), and then offers a detailed rendition of the mechanics of setting up and grading case studies for hundreds of students (9:43). Answering questions from our small but dedicated group, Holly discusses how she prepares students for case studies (25:22), how she uses case studies in first-year courses (27:52), and how she helps students with the rote-memory aspects of courses like Anatomy (31:35). She closes by discussing how to make the grading manageable, even when dealing with so many students (37:15).
