- CUPE Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005-06)
Dr. Melanie Buddle grew up next door to Trent University, in Lakefield, Ontario. She returned to the area to become a history professor at Trent. “Teaching at Trent is like coming home for me,” Prof. Buddle has said.
“I love teaching at Trent,” Prof. Buddle said in response to the CUPE teaching award in 2006. “To be nominated by students, who are the reason we do what we do, makes this a really special award.”
Prof. Buddle has been praised for the inclusive yet academically rigorous environment she creates in her classroom. Students have said that Prof. Buddle’s tutorials give them an appreciation for the study of history and the humanities. About Prof. Buddle’s class, one student said “I cannot think of a better way to wake up on Monday morning. You do not wake up thinking ‘I have class,’ you wake up shouting ‘Yes! I have class with Melanie today!’”
Prof. Buddle holds a B.A. from the University of Guelph, an M.A. from the University of Northern British Columbia, and a Ph.D. the University of Victoria.
