- Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching (1981-82)
In 1972 Dr. John Syrett began his teaching duties at Trent University. During his time here, Prof. Syrett served in a number of different capacities, including: senior tutor of Peterborough Robinson College, chair of the History Department, associate dean of part-time studies and acting dean of Arts and Science. Before retiring as Professor Emeritus of history, Prof. Syrett taught courses on 19th century and modern American history, women in North America, the South and New England.
When Prof. Syrett was nominated for a Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1981, his name was mentioned more frequently than any other professor that year, said Lucille Strath, who was chairwoman of the teaching awards committee at the time. One nominator said Prof. Syrett instilled a “sense of excitement and joy of learning in his students, and raised his profession to an art form.”
Prof. Syrett received his B.A. from Columbia University and his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin. The Trent community was saddened by his death on August 17, 2005.
