- CUPE Award for Excellence in Teaching (2000-01)
Jill S. Smith was a dedicated teacher at Trent in Oshawa and throughout summer semesters with Julian Blackburn College. She taught Women’s Studies and her influence was exemplary, especially in Oshawa.
While serving as Associate Dean and Principal of Julian Blackburn College, Dr. Elizabeth Popham, said that Prof. Smith took her Oshawa students’ learning “beyond the classroom and out into the community, helping build the university community in Oshawa.” Prof. Smith encouraged her students to be active community participants by being an active participant herself. She organized fundraisers and helped produce a student production of the Vagina Monologues.
Prof. Popham said that while Prof. Smith has had numerous public successes, her true success as a teacher is more subtle. One student called Prof. Smith "a mentor, a role model, but most ... a friend." Another student said that Prof. Smith “understood when direction was needed and also when to stand back and let us learn on our own.”
