At the Intersection between Blackness and Muslimness

Dr. Nadiya Ali, assistant professor of sociology at Trent Durham Greater Toronto Area, noticed a distinct lack of published research that spoke to the unique experience of Black Muslim communities in Canada.

Her research is dedicated to documenting and understanding the intersections between Blackness and Muslimness, the unique ways in which each of these aspects of identity influence one another, and providing capacity for members of these communities to advocate for solutions to Anti-Black Islamophobia through policy, resources and community engagement.

We sat down with Professor Ali, winner of a 2022 Trent Durham Dean’s Research Award, to find out why it’s important to study Anti-Black Islamophobia.
