Faculty Recognized for Exceptional Teaching and Research Achievements

Trent University recently held its annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Research to recognize the outstanding contributions of faculty members in research, innovation, and teaching. This year, over 400 nominations were submitted by students and faculty, the highest number in Trent's history.

“We are thrilled to recognize the exceptional research achievements of our faculty at Trent University,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, vice-president of Research & Innovation. “The caliber of nominations this year was impressive, signaling the research excellence that permeates the University. These faculty are engaged in deep and innovative research that is world-class, but they are equally advancing student curiosity, skills and knowledge right here at Trent.”

Dr. Claire Mooney, the acting dean of Education, and Dr. Fergal O'Hagan, the associate dean, co-hosted the celebration and expressed their great honour in acknowledging faculty members who have positively impacted so many lives.

"It is so meaningful to able to come together and celebrate Trent faculty in person for the first time since 2019," said Professor Mooney. "This year we see yet more evidence that during these past challenging times our faculty have been unwavering in their passion and dedication to teaching, and have continued to go above and beyond in their support of students. Faculty at Trent continue to inspire the next generation of scholars through their innovative teaching practice and their steady focus on student learning."

The evening included the presentation of several notable awards to staff and faculty:

  • Distinguished Research Award: Dr. Hugh Elton, Ancient Greek and Roman Studies

  • Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Elizabeth Russell, Psychology

  • Early Career Researcher Awards: Dr. Jenn Cole, Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies, and Gender & Social Justice; and Dr. Kim Ritchie, Trent/Fleming School of Nursing
