Members of the Trent Community are invited to join us for a special, international Brown Bag Talk, September 26, 2022 at Noon in Bata 411.

Speaker: Dr. Daragh McDermott of Trent Nottingham University in the UK
Abstract:
AutOnoME: An Examination of how autistic gender minority youth (GMY) experience online spaces.
In this talk, Dr. McDermott will describe a recent qualitative study that examined autistic gender diverse young people’s online lives. Through an application of intersectionality theory (Crenshaw, 1991), data from 18 autistic gender minority youth were collected through photo elicitation methods and via semi-structured interviews. Findings from the study highlighted a complex and challenging landscape of online spaces. Importantly, online experiences were often used to connect with others they felt shared their identities or to improve their understanding of their gender or autistic identities. Online spaces also exposed participants to discrimination, harassment, and outright abuse, which they describe as harrowing and having an impact on their health and well-being. Implications, limitations and directions for further research will be explored.

Monday, September 26, 2022 - 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Location: Bata Library Room 411
