Trent University Honours Top Athletes at Annual Awards Ceremony
In addition to her award for the top female participant in intramural programs for Lady Eaton College and the Excalibur Award of Distinction, Miss Arkell was the sole winner of the Arthur Cup, the University's most prestigious award for graduates who have demonstrated outstanding contribution, sportsmanship, participation, and leadership in the athletic programs. Elspeth Arkell, who hails from New Hamburg, will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and will be finishing her studies this fall as part of the Queen's-Trent Concurrent Education Program. She has been a member of the varsity women's soccer team during her four years at the University, and was recognized for her positive influence both on and off of the soccer field. She is a past winner of the University Athletic Award, was named an Academic-All-Canadian, and this past November, was selected as Trent's OUA Woman of Distinction. In presenting the award, Director of Athletics Bill Byrick highlighted Arkell's contribution to her sport and to the Athletics program at Trent. "Elspeth has been a wonderful role model and positive influence on many of her fellow students, in both the recreational and competitive programs. She embodies the spirit of this award, and she has earned the respect and admiration of many student athletes," said Byrick. The following students were honoured with the University Athletic Award, presented to third- and fourth-year students who have demonstrated a significant contribution to the varsity and campus recreation programs: Amy Bambury - Kitchener Josh Connor - Whitby Stephan Donald - Peterborough John Epping - Peterborough Thomas Gibson - Vancouver Lisa Lahey - Pickering Nora Livingstone - Hamilton Laura Lynch - Mallorytown Laura McAlpine - Kingston Michael Moores - Mississauga Rebecca Rodin - Peterborough Tamar Walsh - Coldwater The following varsity athletes were honoured for outstanding commitment and dedication to their respective sports:
