Trent Coach named to FISU Games Staff

Craig HarrisAfter three years as an assistant coach with the Trent University women's rugby team, Craig Harris was selected as an assistant coach for Canada at the 2006 World University Women's Rugby 7's Championship to be held in Rome, Italy.

Joining Mr. Harris on the Canadian staff is Sue Chaulk, who will be head coach. Sue is the head coach for women's rugby at the University of Ottawa.

"This is a fantastic opportunity and I'm honoured to be selected to the coaching staff. Nancy (Marcotte) and I have been working hard to raise the profile of the Trent Women's Rugby. I think this is a sign that work is paying off." said Mr. Harris. Ms. Marcotte is the head coach of women's rugby at Trent University.

Along with his coaching duties at Trent, Mr. Harris coaches at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School and with the Peterborough Pagan's Rugby Club.

Mr. Harris recently attended a training camp in Trinidad designed to evaluate players for the 2006 championships.

"This was a great opportunity to work with some of the best players in the country and I will be bringing back what I learned at that level to Peterborough. Hopefully I'll be able to help some Trent players get to the same competition in 2008," added Harris.

"We are delighted to see Craig recognized for his efforts in working with student athletes and in helping to develop the sport of Women's Rugby. Craig, and all of our Trent University coaches have worked hard to build our respective varsity programs, and it's great for Craig to be honoured with this task. He will be a great ambassador for Trent throughout Canada and abroad," added Trent University Athletics Director Bill Byrick.

The 2006 FISU World University Women's Rugby 7's Championship will take place in Rome, Italy from August 4-6, 2006.
