World AIDS Day to be Commemorated at Colloquium

Red RibbonThe Trent community will commemorate World AIDS Day on Thursday, December 1, 2005 with a World Affairs Colloquium titled, "Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise."

The colloquium aims to bring together interested students, faculty and community members to discuss the AIDS pandemic, specifically as it relates to Africa and the Caribbean.

The theme is based on the international theme for 2005 and will focus on how to fight the pandemic through a commitment to both the millennium development goals as well as the pledge made by G8 leaders last summer to reduce poverty.

Distinguished guest panelists include Dr. John Wasikye Kirya, president of Africa in Partnership Against HIV/AIDS, Dr. Raymond Mika, executive of the African Social Council and Dr. Edith Atieno Wambayi, a research specialist at Durham College who has just returned from Southern Africa.

These speakers will each address the topic with special reference to their experiences and organizations.

Everyone is invited to come out, take part and be informed. There will be an extended question and answer/discussion session so that all students who want to voice their concerns and experiences will be able to do so.

HIV/AIDS ribbons, condoms and HIV/AIDS awareness stickers and information packets will be available for participants.

The event is being hosted by the Trent African and Caribbean Students Union (TACSU) in collaboration with the World Affairs Colloquium Organizing Committee, the Trent International Students Association (TISA), the Trent International Program (TIP), the Trent Women's Centre and the Peterborough AIDS Resource Network (PARN).

The colloquium will take place from 5-7 p.m. in the Champlain College Council Chambers.
