Leader in Communication Studies to Visit Trent

Professor Emeritus Gertrude J. Robinson, of McGill University's Department of Art History and Communication Studies, will give a talk on gender and equity issues in journalism at Trent University on Thursday, November 17.

Her newly published book, Gender, Journalism, and Equity: Canadian, U.S. and European Experiences (Hampton Press), is an analysis of the journalism profession with a unique emphasis on the gendered experience of journalists.

The book presents comparative data regarding North American and European societies. It also examines the impact of equity legislation within these societies.

Prof. Robinson has been a central figure in the development of communication studies in Canada, as the founding President of the Canadian Communication Association (CCA), as a long-time Editor of the Canadian Journal of Communication, and as a former Director and major force in the development of McGill University's Graduate Program in Communications.

The prestigious Robinson Book Prize, awarded annually by the CCA to the author of the best book published in Canadian communication studies, is named in her honour. Her previous books include Studies in Canadian Communications (1975), News Agencies and World News (1981), Women and Power: Canadian and German Experiences (second edition, 1992), and Constructing the Quebec Referendum: French and English Media Voices (1998).

All are welcome to the presentation, which will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Champlain College Council Chamber. A wine and cheese reception will follow in the Champlain College Senior Common Room.

The event is co-sponsored by Sociology, Political Studies, Women's Studies, and the Frost Centre.
