END of SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream

Writer and producer Gregory Greene will be at Trent University on Saturday, November 5 to screen and discuss his film, END of SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream.

The END of SUBURBIA explores the American way of life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era where global demand for fossil fuels is beginning to outstrip supply. Some scientists and policy makers featured in the documentary argue that the world oil peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are already upon us.

"People are really beginning to pay attention to energy issues, spurred on, in part, by the significant increase in oil prices – so the film is very timely," explained Julie Cosgrove, KWIC Coordinator.

"Oil depletion is a global issue that North Americans are now beginning to experience in a very personal way – certainly by increased energy prices, but also in the increase of natural disasters, decreased air quality and other effects of global warming," she said. "Greg is touring North America with three and four film screenings a week to crowds of 500 to 1,000 people. We didn't want Peterborough to miss out. The opportunity to hear Greg speak about this film and the issues it raises might be just the impetus Peterborough needs to develop and implement a vision for sustainability right here in our own community."

The screening is being organized by the Kawartha World Issue Centre (KWIC). The International Development Studies Department at Trent University is co-sponsoring the event in collaboration with several other community groups.

The screening will take place on Saturday, November 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Wenjack Theatre
