Trent Students Scare Up Donations

Trick or EatMore than 100 Trent University students will spend Halloween raising awareness about local hunger by connecting with the Peterborough community through the Trick or Eat program.

The students will dress up in costumes on Halloween night, Monday, October 31 and canvass their neighbourhoods to collect non-perishable food items for Kawartha Food Share. This year's Trick or Eat campaign has a goal of collecting 6,000 pounds of food.

The students are also aiming to help educate their neighbours about local hunger and ways the community can address it through volunteer opportunities.

Trent will be one of 34 post-secondary campuses across Canada participating in Trick or Eat, which is a Meal Exchange program. Meal Exchange is a national, student-driven, registered charity.

Over the last three years, 424,000 pounds of food has been collected. This year, the goal is to raise $100,000 and 120,000 meals nationally.

Meal Exchange is also launching an online fundraising campaign for Trick or Eat so that individuals can donate to local and provincial agencies.

"Trick or Eat is in its fourth year and is experiencing continued growth both in donations and student involvement. As the most successful of Meal Exchange programs, Trick or Eat is a phenomenal way for students and the community to work together to address local hunger. In the process, their involvement prepares today's youth for their responsibilities as members of the community," said Dave Kranenburg, programs and campus advisor for Meal Exchange.
