Trent International Program Welcomes New Students

Orientation weekend at Camp Kawartha

The Trent International Program (TIP) will welcome 110 new international students to Trent University this weekend.

The students will participate in the TIP Camp orientation weekend at Camp Kawartha north of Peterborough.

"We have a tried and true structure to help them feel at home at Trent University," says Dr. Michael Allcott, director of TIP. "TIP Camp creates a sense of Trent being where the world learns together."

During the weekend, the new students will have the opportunity to swim and canoe. TIP Camp volunteers will teach the students about the academic system at Trent to help ensure their success in the classroom as well as give them information on the community of Peterborough.

"We give them an utterly Canadian cottage experience where they will make friends with other Canadian and international students. Those friendships are key to their survival and success," he explained.

A highlight of the weekend is the Community Luncheon on Sunday, September 5. Deputy Mayor Bill Juby will officially welcome the students to the community and join them for lunch. Don Watkins, Trent University International Advisory Council member, also will attend the luncheon.

In total, there are more than 500 international students at Trent from more than 90 different countries.
