Alumni Association Hosts Original Three Classes Reunion

Members of Trent University's first class, along with those from 1965 and 1966, reconnected with each other and the past at the Original Three Classes Reunion August 27 - 29; this was the first event in a year-long celebration of Trent's 40th anniversary.

Former students, staff and faculty members who made history as part of Trent's first family, were reunited at an array of special events throughout the weekend. Among the events was the Founders' Barbecue Lunch, which saw the first two individuals who registered at Trent in 1964, take part in a symbolic re-registration with Assistant Registrar Allan Barnfield. That evening, members of the three original graduating classes were gowned and piped across the Lady Eaton College bridge reminiscent of their convocation ceremonies.

"Without these individuals, there would be no 40th anniversary," says Kim Fielding, Alumni Reunion and Special Projects Officer and a Trent alumna. "There is a strong sense of camaraderie among those who attended; it's a reunion, it's reconnecting, it's coming home."

More than 150 people attended, which in itself is a testament to the commitment of Trent's alumni, says Tony Storey, Director, Alumni Affairs.

"Forty years ago, Governor General George Vanier officially opened Trent and exhorted the founding students, staff, faculty and community supporters to be 'creative, adventurous and courageous.' We owe our founders an enormous debt for bringing those dreams to life."

The University celebrates its 40th birthday on October 17, 2004. More information about anniversary events at Trent University is available at
