Trent skier to compete at World University Games

Though fourth-year biology student Stephen Hart will graduate this spring, he won't be taking the summer off. Instead, he sees running, rollerskiing and strength training in his future.

These workouts will help to prepare him for the upcoming World University Games in Innsbruck, Austria, in January 2005. Mr. Hart has been chosen as one of six male cross-country skiers to represent Canada. The Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) organizes this Olympic-style event.

"I'll be training with this in mind," says Mr. Hart. "It's very exciting."

Mr. Hart was chosen for the team by Canadian Interuniversity Sport based on his performance throughout the season. He had a successful season and recently received five athletic awards at Trent University's Department of Athletics and Recreation's 35th annual Athletic Awards Ceremony. This Peterborough native was named the most valuable member of the Nordic Skiing and Cross Country Running teams, was recognized as an OUA All-Star and Athlete of the Week, and received a University Athletic Award.

The games will mark the first time Mr. Hart has traveled to continental Europe and the first time he has raced against European skiers. He is a strong supporter of this competition, because it promotes the balance between academics and athletics, allowing students to pursue their studies as well as attend a major competition.

"For now, it's a nice way for me to keep skiing at a very competitive level," he says.
