Trent and Community to benefit from $200,000 Grant for Peterborough DNA Cluster Project

The Greater Peterborough Area DNA Cluster Project has been awarded a grant of $200,000 from the Biotechnology Cluster Innovation Program (BCIP) to create a business plan for the proposed DNA Cluster Research and Development Centre, to be constructed at Trent University.

Trent University President Bonnie Patterson was delighted to announce the news at a recent meeting of the Board of Governors. "With the expertise of Dr. Bradley White and the critical mass of partners and related skills and resources, Trent University is poised to be at the centre of an economic touchstone for the region’s future," said President Patterson. "The BCIP announcement of this grant augurs well for the next stages of the project’s development."

The Peterborough DNA Cluster Project (PDC) is a strategic alliance between private and public sector partners such as Trent University, Sir Sandford Fleming College, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Maxxam Analytics. The purpose behind the PDC is to advance DNA Research and the forensic sciences as well as develop its practical uses. Some of the PDC’s initial projects will include automation of DNA sample collection, preparation, and analysis; wildlife and commercial stock management through DNA profiling of populations; potential for improved forensic applications for criminal justice, development of applied degree programs and shared skill with local educational institutions; and disease prevention, management, and control.

The Ontario Government, through BCIP, has provided funding of up to $2.2 million to regional biotechnology consortia across the province for development of strategic business plans outlining biotechnology infrastructure projects.
