Open House celebrates five years of research at Oliver Ecological Research Centre

The Trent University community invited donors, faculty and staff to help celebrate the fifth anniversary of the James McLean Oliver Ecological Centre on Friday, June 20.

The Oliver Centre Director Tom Hutchinson and his colleagues will spoke at 3 p.m. Guests had the opportunity to meet the researchers at the Oliver Centre and learn about the environmental and ecological research they are conducting.

Informal tours of the 270-acre estate on the shores of Pigeon Lake near Bobcaygeon were offered. The property contains a wide range of natural habitats suitable for teaching and research of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Research: The First Five Years:

  • Monitoring of air pollution and collection of climate data
  • Long-term salamander survey
  • Amphibians-species diversity and populations monitoring
  • Ecology of the bullfrog in Nogies Creek: a mark and recapture study
  • Ecology of the Southern Flying and Eastern Grey Squirrels
  • Ozone damage to garden vegetables
  • The response of Sugar Maple seedlings to increased UV-B, warming and nitrogen
  • The effects of land-use on breeding success in woodland-nesting birds
  • The annual banding of Saw-whet owls
  • A native predator for Eurasian watermilfoil
  • Effects of residential development on littoral zone fish communities
  • Uptake of lead and cadmium through bark in mature Sugar Maple, White Ash and White Pine
  • The residence time of lead and cadmium in the forest floor
  • Air-surface exchange of PBDEs and PCBs

From Peterborough take Hwy. 29 north to "Jack and Jill", turn left to Buckhorn, north on Hwy. 36 to Flynn's Corners, keep towards Bobcaygeon. Just before Bobcaygeon, Mill Line Road is on the left. Follow Mill Line Road to the Centre.
