Trent University Students to Benefit from CBC Radio’s Peter Gzowski Internship Program
Trent one of only four Canadian universities selected to participate
A new internship program announced today by CBC Radio to honour the late Peter Gzowski will introduce Trent students to possible careers in radio programming.
The CBC Radio Peter Gzowski Internships are aimed at fourth year students. Trent University is one of four Canadian universities to be selected to participate in the internship program.
Bonnie Patterson, Trent University President, commended the CBC for its initiative that will provide new career opportunities for senior Trent students. "It is a fitting tribute to Peter that the CBC chose to structure the internship program in a way that will give students opportunities to live and work in different communities across Canada. Peter would be very proud that a program named in his honour will allow Trent University students to develop their programming skills and explore the Canada he loved so much."
Commenting on the CBC’s decision to create the internship program, Peter Gzowski’s partner Gillian Howard expressed her gratitude. "Our family is very pleased that the CBC has chosen to recognize Peter in this way. The internship program creates special links between CBC Radio and Canadian universities, and in particular to Trent University that held such a special place in Peter’s heart. We are very pleased to see Peter’s name associated with a program that will provide students with unique learning and career opportunities."
Reflecting about the importance of Trent University, Gzowski wrote in 1989: "From its human scale through its lack of pretension about its own remarkable achievements, and right up to its achingly lovely physical setting, Trent University is as special in the academic community as Canada itself in the wider world. Perhaps more than ever in our history, we need such institutions now, not only to enrich our understanding of our past, but to act as beacons for our future."
An acclaimed broadcaster, author and journalist Peter Gzowski became the eighth Chancellor of Trent University in July 1999. The CBC radio host of Morningside (1982-97) received an honorary degree from Trent in 1987 for outstanding public service and broadcasting. In 1992 he donated his papers to the Trent University Archives because of his feeling of affinity for what Trent has come to stand for.
