Department of Athletics and Recreation Wins Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award for Tenth Consecutive Year
Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario Recognizes Trent University for Intramural Excellence
For the tenth consecutive year, Trent University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation has been awarded the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario’s Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award.
“Campus Recreation offers each student a fun, active and enjoyable way to meet new friends and connect at Trent,” says Kate Pearce, coordinator, Camps and Campus Recreation. “We offer a great variety of programs so everyone can find something they like or try something new.”
Trent is one of 73 schools from across the province, and one of only five post-secondary institutions, to receive this year’s award. CIRA Ontario presents the Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award annually to the top programs at Ontario schools.
In a letter, John Byl, president of CIRA Ontario said: “All program recognized use students in a leadership capacity within their program. You (Trent) have greatly improved the quality of education for students by recognizing the value of physical activity for mental and physical well-being."
At Trent, over 1,400 students participated in intramural activities during the 2011-2012 academic year. Activities ranged from ultimate Frisbee, intramural ice hockey, basketball, soccer, and volleyball and the more unique inner tube water polo and inner tube ultimate Frisbee. The past year also saw the introduction of Midnight Madness Dodgeball which grew quickly to become a campus favourite.
In 2011-12 the Campus Recreation program also enjoyed continued success with the men’s extramural hockey team that competed against schools in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) league. Building on the success of their first year in the league, the team once again qualified for The Challenge Cup, the tournament of champions, for the second year in a row. Looking to the future, Trent University hopes to introduce a Women’s extramural team soon.
Speaking about the award-winning campus recreation program at Trent, former Campus Rec staff member and program participant Christina Skrypka says: “Trent’s Campus Rec program has been a large part of my life throughout my university career. It helped me to become a more confident student leader, and a more outgoing person overall. I loved being able to meet new people, and try new sports that I thought were completely out of my league.”
