Scotiabank Donates $400,000 to Trent International Program
Scotiabank's Bright Future donation helps Trent University develop global leaders of tomorrow
Complementing Trent University’s reputation for excellence in international education, Scotiabank has donated $400,000 to the Trent International Program (TIP) to establish the Scotiabank International Student Scholarship and Prize Fund. The donation was presented at this year’s Cultural Outreach Event, “Cirque Culturel,” at Showplace Peterborough on March 16, 2013.
“Scotiabank is proud to support Trent University, which is a pillar of the Peterborough community,” said Sue Graham Parker, Scotiabank executive vice president of Global Human Resources and Trent alumna, who presented the cheque to students during the show. “Trent has long believed that investing in international education helps build future global leaders and Scotiabank shares in this belief. As a result of a broad, multi-national presence, Scotiabank recognizes the importance that a global mindset plays in an increasingly interconnected world. We are proud to make this investment under the Scotiabank Bright Future philanthropic program.”
“This gift from Scotiabank gave me the rare opportunity to study independently abroad,” says TIP student Maryam Azraa Azizuddin, the first beneficiary of Scotiabank’s Bright Future donation. “I truly believe that Trent provides each individual, both internationally and locally, the push to succeed in what we’re strongest in.” An international student from Malaysia, Ms. Azizuddin hopes to complete a joint major in History and International Development Studies, to pursue a career as a human rights officer.
In addition to the $400,000 donation, Scotiabank also sponsored “Cirque Culturel” event, a popular theatrical presentation organized by the Trent International Student Association (TISA) that features international cultural celebrations.
The Trent International Program
TIP allows Trent students from a variety of disciplines to benefit from a significant, globally-conscious program as they excel in their studies on an international scale, and fulfills a global need for ethical engagement in international education.
Scotiabank Scholarship and Prize Fund
Scotiabank’s gift of $400,000 over ten years, through a blend of expendable and endowed funding, will be used to provide scholarship support to qualifying students attending Trent University from countries in which Scotiabank operates internationally, and prize support to students on exchange programs at Trent partner universities abroad where Scotiabank operates.
Scotiabank International Scholars are chosen based on achievement in academic excellence and receive approximately $5,000 annually per student, depending on financial need. Scotiabank International Prize recipients will also be selected based on the same criteria, with prizes of up to $3,000 per student to cover additional costs associated with travel and living abroad.
With a long history of supporting communities through its global Scotiabank Bright Future program, a grassroots philanthropic program, “Scotiabank’s contribution is a natural fit for Trent University’s ongoing program of internationalization,” said Dr. Michael Allcott, TIP director. “This donation will allow for the continued growth of Trent’s already acclaimed reputation for attracting the best students from around the globe.”
