Strong increases in corporate and non-profit research income growth have bolstered Trent University as one of the top undergraduate research universities in Canada, according to the annual rankings by Research Infosource Inc.

In the 2021 rankings of Canada’s top 50 research universities, Trent ranked #3 in Ontario and #6 in all of Canada in the undergraduate category. This year’s rankings also place the University in the undergraduate Winner’s Circle in two categories – #1 in Ontario (#2 in Canada) for not-for-profit research income growth percentage and #2 in Canada for corporate research income growth percentage.

“Our faculty, graduate and undergraduate students work closely with diverse partners to conduct significant leading-edge research,” says Dr. Cathy Bruce, acting vice president of Research and Innovation at Trent. “The 2021 Research Infosource rankings clearly reflect the growth and leadership of community-based and partnered research at Trent, with top-two honours in the corporate and not-for-profit research categories. Being #2 in research income growth in our class is a testament to the dedication of Trent researchers and the engagement of our broader research community.”

2021 Research Infosource Top 50 Research Universities Rankings Highlights:

  • #3 in Ontario, #6 in all of Canada*
  • #2 in Canada (Winner’s Circle) for percentage growth in corporate research income*
  • #1 in Ontario (Winner’s Circle) for percentage growth of not-for-profit research income*
  • #3 in Canada for publication impact*
  • Top 2 in Canada for corporate and not-for-profit research income growth percentage over past 20 years*

The 2021 results also showcase some of the biggest strides universities have taken in key categories over the past two decades. In the Spotlight on Two Decades of University Research Progress, Trent was ranked second among undergraduate institutions for the growth percentage of corporate and not-for-profit research income, increasing research income in these categories by nearly 300% and more than 3,000%, respectively, over the last 20 years.

The results speak strongly to Trent’s long-standing reputation as an interdisciplinary, research-intensive institution and complement the University’s rankings by Maclean’s, as the top undergraduate institution in Ontario, now 11 years running.
