2020 Board of Governors’ Leadership Scholarship Recipient Announced
Board members heard a presentation from first-year student Robert Ta, the recipient of this year’s Board of Governors Leadership Scholarship. As a musician, competitive swimmer, passionate community volunteer, and aspiring medical professional, Mr. Ta reflected on being the recipient of this prestigious scholarship noting that “it helped me to see how far I’ve come as a student and a future prospective healthcare professional.” Mr. Ta, a Biomedical Science student from North York, emphasized that he selected Trent out of a myriad of other offers because it “was a place for students like myself with innovative ideas, who want to be part of a community that is very inclusive and supportive.” The award was established in 1996 by then-Board Chair Jalynn Bennett, and Robert Ta is this year’s recipient.
Trent Alumna Lucie Edwards Appointed Governor Emeritus
Trent University’s Board of Governors approved the appointment of alumna Lucie Edwards (’73) as governor emeritus effective June 30, 2020. Trent Alumna Jaime McKenna Appointed Newest Member to Trent Lands Committee
The Board of Governors approved the appointment of board member Jaime McKenna (’97) to the Trent Lands Committee for a three-year term effective October 9, 2020, and ending June 30, 2023. The Trent Lands Committee is a critical resource to the Board and University administration with regards to the sustainable development of the Trent lands, and addresses the complexities of lands consultation and land development opportunities on campus. 2019/2020 Audited Financial Statements
The Board reviewed and approved the audited financial statements for fiscal year 2019/20 and noted that the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the University as of April 30, 2020. The Operating Fund ended the fiscal year with a nominal surplus of $0.3 million before fair value and pension actuarial adjustments. This financial result was primarily due to tuition-only enrolment growth, despite a 7.2% increase in enrolment from 2018/19, government grants were $0.5 million less than last year as enrolment growth was not funded.
