Hands-On Work at SKiN Laser Clinic Proves Valuable to Trent Students
Kristy Metzger and Keira Fieldhouse, both majoring in Biology and Forensic Science with a specialization in Health Sciences, gain valuable experience including treating people for skin conditions
Two Trent University students – Kristy Metzger and Keira Fieldhouse - are gaining valuable experience with placements at Peterborough’s SKiN Laser Clinic.
Ms. Metzger, who is double-majoring in Biology and Forensic Science with a specialization in Health Sciences, says she enjoys working closely with health care professionals by joining clinical-trial consultations with clients looking for treatment for skin disorders. Ms. Metzger also works in the clinic’s research lab, helping to prepare blood samples to be sent off for analysis.
“Meeting with people face-to-face, and communicating and applying what I’ve learned in university in a real-life workplace environment…the hands-on aspect has been really great,” she says.
Ms. Fieldhouse, meanwhile, is having her eyes opened to other career possibilities via her placement.
At the clinic, she is on the front lines of treatment, testing patients for allergens as well as administering photo therapy treatment, which involves the application of ultra-violet light to treat various skin conditions.
Also a Biology and Forensic Science double major with a specialization in Health Sciences, Ms. Fieldhouse says she’s also being exposed to career options she might not have otherwise considered.
“My placement is helping me determine what component of the work I really love, and what I’m not so crazy about, helping me decide what I want to pursue,” she says.
