Centre for Teaching and Learning Welcomes New Director
Dr. Joel Baetz will oversee a strategic plan for the Centre for Teaching and Learning
The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has announced Dr. Joel Baetz will be taking on the role of director. As an integral part of the Trent University Durham GTA community, Professor Baetz brings a career of teaching experience and excellence to the University-wide Centre.
Speaking of his appointment, Prof. Baetz stated, “Trent’s reputation for inspiring, generous, and effective teaching is impressive. I have friends and family members who went to Trent and remember, all these years later, the instructor who took special interest in their work, saw them as a person and not a grade, or helped them understand better their place in the world. I’m excited to join the Centre to support that sort of excellent and effective teaching.”
As part of his mandate, Prof. Baetz will be developing and implementing a strategic plan that brings the CTL into maturity with enriched and personalized professional learning experiences in higher education, as well as supports for conducting research on teaching and learning.
While Prof. Baetz takes on the role of director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Dr. Gillian Balfour will focus her attention on Trent Online. As associate dean of Trent Online, Professor Balfour will be taking Trent’s online programming and instructional design into a new era, with fully online program development and continued enhancement of the caliber of online courses being offered through Trent Online.
Dr. Jacqueline Muldoon, provost and vice-president academic at Trent University, recognizes how fortunate the University is to have such expertise in these positions. “I am pleased that we have such strong leadership to support effective teaching and learning at Trent University,” she said. “As we develop new programming in both online learning and face-to-face higher education teaching, we are well positioned to further enhance our reputation in teaching excellence.”
