Child and Youth Studies Student Gets Boost Toward Dream Program & Career
First-year student Lucas Geeves wins draw for first-year free tuition, a privilege he says will make a huge difference in easing the stress of school and lead to academic success
Ever since Ottawa teenager Lucas Geeves has been able to work, he has been working with kids. Almost every day for the past three years, Mr. Geeves has worked as youth counsellor for young children at a local community centre. Whether it was after he finished class during the school year or full-time in the summer, Mr. Geeves has played an important role in the lives of kids and their parents.
“I went to camp as an elementary school student, and ever since I started to work with young kids, I’ve loved it more and more each day and year.”
Now, Mr. Geeves has officially starting the Child and Youth Studies program at Trent University Durham GTA, and is on his way to his dream career as a teacher.
Making his transition from high school to university, from Ottawa to Oshawa, even easier: winning Trent’s draw for free first-year tuition. Mr. Geeves participated in four of Trent’s webinars offered to prospective students to learn more about how to prepare for university, which earned him entries into the draw.
“I’m really excited to start studying at Trent Durham. Winning free first-year tuition is a big support, helping ease the transition to university," Mr. Geeves says. "The university experience is important to me. It provides a path for me to continue working with kids. And when I read student reviews of Child & Youth Studies at Trent Durham, I knew it would be an inclusive program, unparalleled to other universities.”
Mr. Geeves is ready to dive in when he starts school in September, already thinking about trying out for the soccer team, playing in other intramural sports, and exploring the campus’s opportunities to play and produce music.
