Trent’s Sustainability Office hosted the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, November 6. The event, sponsored by Peterborough Utilities (PDI), was celebrating energy efficiency in the community.
Through a variety of efficiency projects happening on campus, Trent has reduced campus energy consumption by four GWh in the past four years equating to 10% of PDI’s mandated target. These projects have earned Trent over a half million incentive dollars through Save on Energy Programs delivered by PDI. David Whitehouse, of PDI was on campus to present Trent with a cheque for $578,000 to support the many energy retrofits completed and in progress on campus. Some highlights of these efforts include improvements in heating and cooling equipment, improved automation controls in buildings and a complete retrofit of lighting to LEDs.
“We are focused on energy efficiency on campus,” said Shelley Strain, sustainability coordinator at Trent. “In addition to the electricity reduction celebrated at this event, we are also reducing energy use at our Durham GTA campus, and realizing significant reductions in natural gas use. We also anticipate an annual reduction of 670,000m3 of natural gas resulting from these projects.”
Trent’s facilities team is in the last stages of a $15.5 million energy retrofit project that is expected to save $1.5 million in annual utility costs.
