Top Honours: Trent Alum Named Among Top 40 Undergrad Business Professors
International honour for Trent Economics graduate Juan Serpa
Just one year into his career as a professor, Trent Economics graduate Dr. Juan Serpa ’05 has been named one of the top 40 business school professors by the very prestigious Poets & Quants ranking – and, he says, it was his studies at Trent University that laid the groundwork for his success.
“It is a great honour,” said the 30-year-old alumnus and now one of the youngest recipients of the Top 40 award. Professor Serpa, who works as a faculty member at McGill University, credits the connections he made with faculty members at Trent, as well as the progressive atmosphere at the University with getting him to where he is today. He is particularly grateful to his former Economics professor Dr. Bruce Cater.
“Professor Cater taught me how to do research in his spare time, and how to become a prof. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have ended up doing a Ph.D. I really owe him a lot,” says Prof. Serpa.
In addition to the excellent supportive academic environment, Prof. Serpa says one thing he misses most about Trent is the beautiful Symons campus. Prof. Serpa first arrived at Trent at age 18, moving directly to Peterborough from Colombia to pursue his undergraduate degree.
“The day of my eighteenth birthday, I received an email from Trent: I was awarded the International Levy Scholarship. It was probably, one of the top three happiest days in my life,” he says.
