Top Athletes Honoured at Trent University

Trent University's Department of Athletics & Recreation celebrated athletic achievements and honoured its top athletes this evening at the 33rd annual Athletic Awards Ceremony, held at the University's Athletic Complex.

Tammy MacSweyn and Ken Hoard were awarded the Arthur Cup, the University's most prestigious award for graduates demonstrating outstanding contribution, sportsmanship, participation, and leadership in the athletic programs.

Tammy MacSweyn, a fourth-year Sociology student from Dalkeith was recognized for her exceptional involvement with the varsity women's soccer team during the last four years. As the team captain for three years, Tammy has demonstrated outstanding leadership among her peers and continually provided guidance to younger members of the team. She is frequently regarded as a passionate and competitive soccer player, with a strong sense of fair play, and is often described as the 'backbone of the team' by her fellow players. Tammy has captained numerous champion teams in the Campus Recreation programs, and was also recognized, for the second year in a row, as the most valuable player of the varsity women's soccer team.

Ken Hoard, a native of Peterborough who will graduate in June with an honours degree in Biochemistry, has been a key athlete and leader with the University's varsity rowing team over the last four years. He has served on the executive of the rowing club as a club captain, liaison for the Peterborough Rowing Club, and a key organizer of the Head of the Trent regatta. He is an accomplished athlete in the heavy-weight 8's, 4's and scull competitions, and has received the Coholan Bursary and Neil Horne award for his outstanding dedication to the rowing program.
Ken has also been named a CIS Academic All-Canadian for four years in a row, for combining an outstanding academic record with participation in a varsity sport program. Ken continues to be a role model and mentor for novice and recreational rowers.

Paul Wilson, Director of Athletics, presented the awards to MacSweyn and Hoard. "Students like Tammy and Ken are an example not just to their fellow athletes, but to all students," said Wilson. "They combine dedication with leadership, enthusiasm, and talent to be true team players-and valued members of the Trent community."
