Prof. Michael Peterman of Trent's Department of English Literature will lecture on Walden and Civil Disobedience as part of the sixth annual Rooke Lecture Series on March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library. Henry David Thoreau is one of the most enigmatic and fascinating of American writers. He was above all a "bachelor of nature" and an independent thinker whose sharp insights helped to foster modern ecological thinking. His classic study Walden (1854) and his seminal essay Civil Disobedience have influenced many Americans and world figures in their thinking and definitive actions. The Rooke Lectures, which have been presented annually since 1998, honour the memory of the late Barbara Rooke, who was chair of Trent University's Department of English Literature from 1969 to 1973.
